...helping families find answers

  • In the United States, approximately 1 in 200 pregnancies ends in stillbirth, defined as pregnancy loss at 20 weeks or greater.
  • Each year more than 26,000 American women experience a stillbirth.
  • Half of all stillbirths occur at 7 months or later into the pregnancy.
  • In at least 50% of cases, current medical knowledge is unable to determine the cause of the loss.

we want to help...

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) has established The Stillbirth Collaborative Research Network (SCRN) to focus national attention and research efforts on this tragic problem. Over the next five years, the SCRN investigators will be collaborating with doctors and families in communities across the country to more fully define and understand stillbirths and to identify risk factors associated with these losses.

With the help of local research and hospital institutions, a standard protocol for the investigation of stillbirth will be developed and followed. The knowledge that is gained from this careful assessment will provide more families with information about the cause of their loss. Ultimately, the NICHD hopes that these efforts will help identify intervention strategies for women and their doctors that can prevent this tragic pregnancy outcome.
